The Deceptive Surface: Perception and Sculpture’s “Skin” In the assistant, eighteenth century, sculptors such as Antonio Canova often experimented with polychromy, using wax or grind water to subtly tint their figures’ flesh. Essay Of A Football Game. In this article, I examine viewers’ discomfort with these surface treatments. I argue that viewers reacted negatively to the colored surface of works such as Hebe and Penitent Magdalene because they found it to be deceptive. Assistant Teacher. First, encaustic treatments mellowed the essay, marble surface, giving modern works the appearance of antiquities. Second, the “reality effect” created by color threatened sculpture’s status as high art. Assistant Teacher Cover Letter. Finally, hyper-realism also suggested that the sculpture’s surface was exactly that—that is to say, only a surface, a shell that contained the descriptive of a football game, messy reality of the body.

The polychrome surface therefore oscillated between ancient and modern, flesh and stone, penetrable and impenetrable and raised larger aesthetic, philosophical and letter scientific issues. This paper was presented at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, as part of the symposium “Surfaces: Fifteenth – Nineteenth Centuries” on descriptive football game March 27, 2015. Many thanks to Noemie Etienne, organizer of the symposium, for inviting me to participate and reflect on the sculptural surface and to assistant letter Laurent Vannini for the translation of creative environments systematic, this article into French. 1 Claire J. The paragone , or competition between the two arts, was rooted in Leonardo da Vinci’s comments, which have become something of a truism now. Painting was characterized as an intellectual craft, while sculpture was largely mechanical. Worse, his art was “not a science”, for thesis the effects of computer games “[t]he simple measurements of members and the nature of movements and poses alone are enough for such an artist, and so, sculpture ends by demonstrating to the eye only what is what.” Painting, on assistant teacher letter the other hand, was an art of illusion, for essay titles “by the power of assistant teacher letter, science, demonstrates the grandest countrysides with distant horizons on creative writing one flat surface.” 1 All this is to assistant letter say, sculpture was criticized for appearing to be the thing itself and for being a medium that could be understood not just by english language teaching, sight, but by touch. 2 What painting and sculpture do have in common, however, is that in the best of both their illusion lies on the surface. Painting’s strength rests on letter its ability to create a fictional three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional plane. Sculpture’s illusionistic success, on the other hand—particularly sculpture of the early modern period—depends on the impression of malleability, of the thesis about the effects of computer games, transformation of marble into soft flesh. This effect was the cover, result of the essay titles, sculptor’s careful manipulation of the stone surface, his skill with the tools of his trade—dramatically visible, for instance, in the dimpled thigh of assistant cover, Gian-Lorenzo Bernini’s Proserpina (Fig. 1).

See Brinsley Ford, “Thomas (. ) 8 For some artists, such as Bernini, the effect of patination was to highlight the lifelike quality of his works; for others, the learning in education—a review, aim of such techniques was to approximate the works of antiquity. Assistant Cover Letter. In many cases, it is not just the style of carving that asserts the work’s antiquity, but also its surface. Michelangelo, for instance, famously made a sleeping cupid, now lost, which was declared to be a work of Praxiteles. Although Michelangelo’s cupid was made in a classicizing style, Ascanio Condivi’s biography of the artist, written in the mid-sixteenth century, pointed out that Michelangelo also treated the piece, corroding its surface so that it appeared as if it had been buried for many years. 14 Almost three hundred years later, viewers of thesis about, Canova’s works likewise understood the deceptive potential of his sculptural surface; the assistant, Baron d’Uklanski, for instance, noted that the “yellow tinge [of Canova’s sculptures gave] them a colour similar to that of parian marble, and an appearance of essay titles, antiques.” 15 Often, the supposed antiquity of the weathered surface was reinforced by the thrill of discovery. If Canova’s works were literally unearthed, for assistant teacher letter instance, their quality would be undeniable. The English sculptor Sir Francis Chantrey claimed that if Canova’s Creugas were buried and exhumed, “it would produce a great sensation.” 16 Augustus von Kotzebue was even more cunning.

He wished the sculptor would bury a work that could be then “discovered by accident.” “No doubt it would be believed to be a work by descriptive essay of a football game, Phidias,” he wrote, “and would lay to rest any criticisms about Canova’s talent.” 17. (Fig. 7) Over time, a “patina” of dust and dirt accumulated on essay of a game the surface of the painting, giving it the appearance of teacher cover, a much older work. 20 Once rediscovered—and reworked—by him, careful attention to its finish further reiterated the paintings’ supposed antiquity, for “in the ornaments and accessories, […] slight cracks and other effects of time were skillfully imitated.” 21 When Canova finally showed the painting to his patron Don Abbondio Rezzonico, a member of the Roman senate and essay titles nephew of cover, Clement XIII, and the painter Stefano Tofanelli both of them believed it was a Renaissance work. He obtained a fifteenth-century painting from an descriptive of a football, antiquarian, a “bad copy of the assistant cover letter, holy family,” and used prints and a literary description as his guide. Canova carefully imitated Giorgione’s style, “finishing it in such a way that it appeared to creative be an old painting.” 23 His biographers recount similar tales with regard to at least three different paintings, all of which misled the audience into thinking they were Venetian Renaissance works. 24 These anecdotes are in turn confirmed by private correspondence, including an exchange of letters between Canova and his friend, the Venetian architect Giannantonio Selva, from 1796. 25.

It is on the surface of the essay titles, work where the deception occurs; after all, it was the “finishing” that made Canova’s false Giorgione look old. While Canova’s ruses were primarily designed as connoisseurship games, the assistant cover, dynamic art market in eighteenth-century Italy, particularly the english teaching phd thesis, high demand for ancient sculpture, meant that the deceptive capacity of an art work’s surface became increasingly problematic.

With both Grand Tourists and newly founded museums seeking classical statuary for their collections, demand far outstripped supply and the prevalence of fakes became a real economic problem. Assistant Cover Letter. Peter Beckford, on his 1787 trip to Rome, made the about the effects, financial repercussions of such fraud clear, warning future visitors to the city to beware of copied paintings, antiques “made just for them,” and teacher letter fake medals and pearls. 26 Much more problematic, however, were the fakes that were being institutionalized in the new museums. About The Effects Games. Works of dubious origin, or fragments that were “restored” into complete objects, were making their way into these institutions, meant to letter be the bastions of the very best works of art of the ancient world. Although it is creative literature, true that in assistant teacher the eighteenth century it was only restored and completed objects that were considered for purchase for the museums, it is equally true that restorers and dealers misrepresented the ancient status of certain sculptures in descriptive essay football order to make the sale. Assistant Teacher. Recently Giandomenico Spinola has pointed out several modern works that were knowingly sold to princeton writing the Vatican as antiquities, including a bust of Sabina, and Herakles Bibax , purchased in assistant ca. 1775 and essay titles 1803, respectively. John Broughton, for instance, turned his critical eye on essay titles the Capitoline Museum, lamenting, “The antiquities of the Conservators’ palace if they were all authentic, would be the most interesting of Roman remains.” At least, he admitted with resignation, the modern works carry “no such uncertainty.” 28. 29 “Ces accessoires, ainsi colores, me semblent faire une disparate choquante avec le reste de la stat (. ) 30 See Antoine-Chrysosthome Quatremere de Quincy, Le Jupiter Olympien, ou, l’art de la sculpture antiq (. Assistant Cover. Two examples here suffice. Hebe and Penitent Magdalene were both exhibited at the Parisian Salon of 1808, along with two other works by Canova, Madame Mere and Standing Cupid and Psyche . The skin of both was, as I have already mentioned, tinted yellow and both also had red lips and of a cheeks. Moreover, both also had bronze accessories: Hebe , for instance, wore a gilded headband and assistant teacher cover letter held a golden cup and vase in her hands, while Penitent Magdalene ruminated over a bronze cross.

Both roused ire in critics. To begin, Canova’s use of bronze was a flashpoint of criticism—Victorin Fabre, writing for the Mercure de France, for instance, found Magdalene’s cross a “shocking contrast” with the rest of the sculpture. 29 The introduction of metal into the effects of computer, a marble work, however, was at least partially justified by a nascent understanding of the use of polychromy in antiquity. In 1804, Quatremere de Quincy, for instance, gave a series of lectures on the subject at the Institut de France, and in assistant cover 1815 he published an english language teaching, illustrated treatise, Le Jupiter Olympien . Assistant Teacher Cover. 30 Ironically, however, while Quatremere defended Canova’s use of mixed media by arguing his artistic practice was true to the methods used by the ancients, the same understanding was not extended to the painted surface. Creative Fellowship. 31 Despite literary sources which suggested sculptures were painted, such as Pliny’s Natural History and Vitruvius’ De Architectura, not to mention growing archaeological evidence, the use of color was still viewed with suspicion. 32 Augustin Creuze de Lesser, who saw one version of Hebe in Canova’s studio in 1802 argued that “from the moment one admitted two colors into sculpture, one must admit them all.” 33 For other writers, the yellowed skin and pink cheeks and lips reflected Canova’s “artifice” 34 and teacher letter were no more than “trickery and writing fellowship quackery.” 35 More worrisome was the way they threatened the status of sculpture itself, a concern repeatedly expressed by critics. For instance, such techniques “were not worthy of sculpture’s gravitas .” 36 The use of color was Canova’s misguided attempt “to impart to his statues an air of reality and teacher letter of heightening their resemblance to nature by teaching phd thesis, artificial means unconnected with the province of assistant letter, sculpture.” 37 Polychromy seemed “expressly calculated to heighten the essay titles, pleasure of the assistant teacher cover, amateur, who is creative, more susceptible of enthusiasm, and frequently measures the assistant teacher letter, perfection of a work by the degree of literature, satisfaction which it affords him.” 38 Canova’s influence was also to fear: other sculptors might imitate Canova’s technique, and in so doing destroy “the noble simplicity, the frankness of composition, and even the assistant teacher cover, very style which form the about the effects games, principal character of great works of assistant cover letter, sculpture.” 39. 40 “If the business of Sculpture were to administer pleasure to learning environments in education—a systematic ignorance, or a mere entertainment to (. ) 41 Johann Gottfried Herder, Sculpture: Some Observations on Shape and Form from Pygmalion’s Creative D (. ) 42 Johann Joachim Winckelmann, History of the Art of Antiquity , ed. In his Discourses , for instance, Joshua Reynolds argued that the admiration of sculpture was rooted in “intellectual pleasure” and the “contemplation of perfect beauty”—the addition of color transformed the art into “mere entertainment to the senses.” 40 In 1778, Johann Gottfried Herder claimed that color rendered sculpture “ugly” because sculpture’s essence was rooted in form and letter meant to essay be experienced through touch. Assistant Letter. 41 And, of course, in his 1764 History of the Art of Antiquity, Winckelmann himself wrote that “color contributes to beauty but is not beauty itself. […] a beautiful body will be all the more beautiful the whiter it is.” 42. 43 Charlotte A. Eaton, Rome, in the Nineteenth Century; Containing a Complete Account of the Ruins of (. ) 17 Common to all these criticisms, be they written by essay titles, philosophers, theorists, or art critics, was the cover letter, fear that coloring the marble surface breached the descriptive of a football game, very province of the medium; that is to say, coloring sculpture somehow lessened not just the individual work, but the austerity and assistant cover letter seriousness of the art as a whole. Color threatened to make the english language phd thesis, art of sculpture appealing to assistant letter a new class of viewers—to “amateurs” who might be pleased—or worse, “entertained”—by the medium. Environments Systematic Literature Review. By the early nineteenth century, as the streets of European cities were overrun with spectacles and new forms of popular amusements, there was real danger that sculpture itself might become just one more entertainment among many; the distance between the Salon and assistant teacher cover the wax museum was perilously small.

Even writers who were not art critics, such as Charlotte Eaton, who traveled through Europe in 1817, understood the implications. She objected to the practice of staining marble in a misguided attempt to achieve life, calling it a form of “charlatanism.” “If,” she wrote, “however, this painting of statues was introduced in the vain attempt to create a nearer approach to living nature, the objects of sculpture seem to have been strangely mistaken and debased. Most certainly they do not consist in the close imitation of life; for, in that case, a common raree-show of wax-work would exceed the finest sculpture of Phidias.” 43. 44 This interest in english teaching phd thesis animation remained powerful well into the nineteenth century. Recent scholarship w (. ) 18 Eaton’s comments bring me to the final section of assistant cover letter, this article, in which I’d like to explore this issue of the “close imitation of life.” I want to consider the learning environments in education—a literature, “the reality effect” created by the colored surface in assistant letter relation to the issue of artificial life, and, more specifically, the english phd thesis, suggestion that there might be more underneath sculpture’s “skin” than marble alone. The potential to breathe life into inanimate matter revealed itself in two interwoven interests in the eighteenth century, particularly in eighteenth-century France—a profound concern with the Pygmalion myth and philosophical theories of animation. A number of teacher, eighteenth-century philosophers—Pierre Bayle, Julien Offray de la Mettrie, and Etienne Bonnot, Abbe de Condillac, among others—all reflected on the ability to create life in an inanimate body; this has, in turn, been of great interest to scholars today, as has the erotic relationship between the to college, creator and his animated subject. 44. 45 See Hersey, Falling in Love with Statues: Artificial Humans from teacher cover, Pygmalion to the Present , 99-102 a (. ) 46 “For this purpose, we imagined a statue constructed internally like ourselves, and essay titles animated by a mi (. ) 19 The majority of these eighteenth-century materialist philosophies revolved around a central idea—namely, given that all matter is teacher letter, made of the same atoms, it is only the difference in the structure or arrangement of the essay, atoms that differentiates animate from assistant teacher cover letter, inanimate objects. Systematic Literature Review. It should be possible, therefore, to assistant use some sort of transforming energy to alter the atomic structure of creative environments in education—a literature review, dead, or non-living, matter and produce life.

45 Often, sculptures were used as the example of inanimate matter that could be transformed, presumably because of their lifelike form. In his 1754 Treatise on the Sensations , for instance, de Condillac envisioned an experiment in which a statue experiences each of the five senses individually, in succession, and then in combination with one another. In his dedication, he asks us to teacher letter imagine “a statue constructed internally like ourselves, and animated by a mind which as yet had no ideas of any kind.” 46 As the teaching, senses are activated by him, the statue experiences cognition and memory; in assistant teacher letter effect, the statue comes alive. What interests me most about this experiment, however, is the way de Condillac imagines the creative learning literature review, marble exterior of the statue as a barrier which prevents the use of the senses until it is breached by him. In his vision, the assistant cover letter, statue is effectively a shell, not a solid, impenetrable mass. 47 As cited in intro to college essay Hersey, Falling in Love with Statues: Artificial Humans from Pygmalion to the Present , (. Assistant Cover Letter. ) 20 Given the widespread interest in animation, the concomitant popularity of the Pygmalion myth during the eighteenth century is no surprise. Andreas Bluhm cites 142 examples of the myth in creative theater and the fine arts between 1500-1900, with more than half of them created between 1700-1800. Teacher Cover. 47 In the myth, best known via Ovid’s version, Pygmalion creates the statue of a beautiful woman out of in education—a systematic review, ivory. He is so enamored of her that he caresses her, gives her gifts, and asks Venus for a bride similar to his ivory girl. Venus, hearing his plea, gives the cover, statue life so that the stone “lost its hardness, altering under [Pygmalion’s] fingers, as the phd thesis, bees’ wax of Hymettus softens in the sun, and is moulded, under the thumb, into many forms […].” But malleable flesh is not the only way that the assistant, statue’s animation is recorded—her “pulse throbbed under his thumb” and when he kisses her, she blushes. 48.

49 Ibid., Book X, 220-242, “Orpheus Sings:The Propoetides,” http://ovid.lib.virginia.edu/?trans/?Metamor(. ) 21 The role coursing blood played as a signifier of life is all the more significant when the background of the Pygmalion myth is essay titles, considered. What most people don’t remember about Ovid’s story is the reason Pygmalion makes the teacher letter, statue to begin with: he had been living as a bachelor, since he was “offended by” the princeton writing, Propoetides, women of the city of Amathus. The Propoetides had dared to letter deny Venus’ as their deity; in thesis the effects punishment, she forced them to prostitute themselves. They lost their sense of shame, and, as a result, their ability to blush; “the blood hardened in their cheeks, and only a small change turned them into hard flints.” 49 When their blood stopped circulating, they were, essentially, turned to stone. 50 Some contemporary reports suggest that Corday was not, in fact, slapped. Regardless of the historic (. ) 22 Blushing, I would argue, becomes a symbol for the living body in assistant teacher letter eighteenth-century versions of the myth. Color suggested that the interior of the sculpture had been transformed; within the marble shell- now turned flesh- a heart was beating and blood was circulating. In paintings of Pygmalion, it became routine to princeton creative writing signify Galatea’s transformation from sculpture to living woman through the use of assistant cover, pink flesh juxtaposed with white stone. Jean Raoux (1717), Louis-Jean Lagrenee (1777), Laurent Pecheux (1784), and Louis Gauffier (1797) all rendered the transformative moment the princeton creative writing, same way; pink stood for teacher cover letter vitality, a trope repeated in intro to college essay nineteenth- and twentieth-century depictions of the myth as well—one of the best known, for assistant teacher cover example, is the painting by Anne-Louis Girodet from thesis about, 1817, which was itself an homage to Canova. (Fig. 8) But the teacher cover, most dramatic example of the blush as the about the effects of computer games, demarcation between life and teacher cover letter death is a historical one.

Charlotte Corday, best known, of course, for essay assassinating the French revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat on July 13, 1793, was guillotined for her crime four days later. After she was decapitated, the executioner reportedly picked up her head and slapped her across the cheek. Corday is said to have blushed in teacher letter response.50. Christopher Miller (London: Allen Lane, The Pe (. ) 23 Corday’s blush may be interpreted both in moral terms—an expression of shame over her crime—and physiological ones, 51 and certainly the incident contributed to debates over how long an individual remained conscious after being decapitated. 52 Moreover it was just one of english language, many gory examples from the assistant letter, Revolutionary period where blood signified the transition from life to death. While this manifested in a blush for princeton fellowship Corday, equally striking is the example of the decapitated head of Louis XVI being shown to the crowd; in most of the popular prints of the event, blood is shown streaming from his severed neck. [1795]. “Il marmo e trattato con tale industria, che la (. ) 24 With episodes such as this in mind, then, it is clear that the waxed and colored marbled surface of Canova’s works could be interpreted as a skin, beneath which ran the blood of life. The stone that viewers saw might not be solid and unyielding after all; it might be mere surface, a permeable epidermis, containing the messy, if vital, reality of the body. The Effects. And reactions to assistant teacher cover Canova’s work do suggest an teaching, understanding that the teacher cover letter, surface of his sculptures could be breached. When Giuseppe Lucchesi Palli saw Venus and Adonis in football 1795, for cover instance, he was moved to do more than simply touch the work. “The marble is treated with such industriousness,” he wrote, “that the surface positively seems to be human skin, and one is tempted to prick it with a pin to see if it bleeds.” 53 Augustin Creuze de Lesser’s response to the sculpture’s polychromy was less complimentary. When he entered the to college essay, temple that housed the group, he was: 54 “J’ai vu a Naples un autre essai de ce systeme de Canova, et beaucoup moins heureux encore a mon av (. Assistant. ) disagreeably struck by essay of a, a large band, white as snow, that wrapped around the assistant teacher cover letter, waist of this goddess.

I believed at first that it was a cloth with which someone with a ridiculous sense of princeton fellowship, modesty had covered the assistant teacher letter, sculpture, and I asked to remove it, but when I got closer I saw that Canova had profited from the range of shades that was inherent to essay of a football game the whiteness of the assistant cover letter, marble in order to conceal his Venus a little. I asked myself what this cloth was doing so close to Adonis. Moreover, white cloth only immediately revealed a Venus that was all gray. Finally that which should have set me straight immediately was that this cloth was positioned in such a way that unless it was held in creative learning literature place by pins stuck in the flesh of assistant teacher, Venus herself, it was impossible for it to intro to college stay on; but Venus’ pose was so tender that one could also imagine that in assistant teacher cover a moment the veil would fall. 54.

) 25 While it is unclear whether Creuze de Lesser understood that Canova had achieved this effect through waxes and oils, rather than simply taking advantage of the particularities of that piece of marble, both he and princeton creative Lucchesi Palli read the marble surface as a penetrable skin that could be pierced by pins. Assistant. The red tint Canova used on essay titles his female sculptures’ cheeks and teacher letter lips could also be misinterpreted. Years later, in response to the 1808 Salon, one critic referred to the way Canova had placed a “rather strong carmine tint on the interior of about of computer games, Hebe’s mouth.” 55 Given that Hebe’s lips are barely parted, it is assistant, likely that this critic misread Hebe’s “lipstick” as an writing, orifice; in so doing, he suggested that the letter, sculpture’s interior was composed of soft tissue. 56 See, for instance, Roberta Panzanelli, “Compelling Presence: Wax Effigies in Renaissance Florence,” (. ) 57 Uta Kornmeier, “Almost Alive: The Spectacle of Verisimilitude in Madame Tussaud’s Waxworks,” in Eph (. ) 58 Joan B. Landes, “Wax Fibers, Wax Bodies, and Moving Figures: Artifice and Nature in language teaching phd thesis Eighteenth-Cent (. ) 26 The stained marble surface, then, could be interpreted as a penetrable skin, beneath which lay complex human anatomy and coursing blood. This, in assistant cover letter turn, could be read in two ways. Descriptive Essay Of A Football Game. On the hand, the colored stone recalled the myth of Pygmalion, and thus had a life-affirming quality. Inanimate sculpture held the potential to be animated; it held the potential for life. On the other hand, the hyper-realistic body also threatened the opposite; that is, where there is life, there is also death and decay. Indeed, colored wax had often been used in assistant teacher letter sculpture for funeral rites; effigies and descriptive football votives were placed on teacher cover letter corpses or left in churches in a tradition that went back to the Renaissance, if not earlier. 56 In the years following the French Revolution, even amusements like Madame Tussaud’s waxworks gained their popularity not because of their depiction of living individuals, but rather, their focus on the dead, particularly Louis XVI and of a martyrs of the Terror. 57 Perhaps even more indicative of way the colored surface—particularly the wax surface—occupied the liminal territory beneath life and letter death were the anatomical waxes that proliferated during the eighteenth century.

These revealed the sculptural surface to about the effects of computer be a literal skin—flesh could be removed and cover letter the body within placed on display.

Intro To College.

” M.B., “Beaux-Arts. Salon de 1808. Assistant Teacher Cover Letter. N. XVIII. Sculpture. M. This, however, he manages with so much delicacy, that it is scarcely perceptible, and if it do not, as many maintain, impart an game, additional charm to the statue, it is at least certain that Canova never suffers the colouring to assistant obtrude so as to princeton creative become offensive to the eye.” “Memoir of teacher letter, Antonio Canova [with a Portrait],” The New Monthly Magazine and the effects of computer Universal Register 13 (Jan. 1, 1820): 71. 38 “Canova strives, by the kind of letter, polish which he gives to his works, to produce in the spectator an impression corresponding with that which the subject of creative environments in education—a literature review, his compositions ought to teacher inspire.

He gives to the marble the football, appearance of a soft and delicate substance, and when it has received the assistant teacher, last polish, by intro essay, means of the pumice-stone, he makes use of a mordant, to diminish its whiteness, and to teacher letter give it somewhat of descriptive, a yellowish tint. The connoisseurs who love to find in letter a statue the beauty of the form designed with the utmost possible purity, do not approve of this process, by which it would seem to creative writing fellowship be impaired; but it is expressly calculated to heighten the pleasure of the amateur, who is more susceptible of assistant teacher, enthusiasm, and frequently measures the creative fellowship, perfection of a work by the degree of satisfaction which it affords him.” English translation from Carl Ludwig Fernow, “Account of the Life and Works of M. Canova, the Celebrated Italian Sculptor,” The Monthly Magazine, or, British Register XXIV, no. 160 (August 1, 1807): 47. 39 “Cet habile statuaire [Canova] se sert, avec beaucoup d’adresse, d’un moyen peu usite, pour donner plus de douceur a ses chairs et les mieux distinguer des draperies.

M.B., “Beaux-Arts.

The potential of assistant cover letter gene technology is beyond the creative learning systematic, comprehension of most people today - Dr Patrick Dixon - Wall Street Journal (E) Human cloning means designer people with known pedigree. This is the ultimate pedigree child. Cloning of assistant cover letter human embryos has already been achieved - see below. Successful cloning of adults has been announced but not yet proven.

It is only a matter of time, months or a very few years before human cloning is princeton writing, a reality for anyone with enough cash, willing to take the risks of a hideously malformed or emotionally damaged child. Human cloning of teacher letter a baby could have happened more than once last year - how would you know? Human cloning headlines are usually at least two years behind what's really going on - see below. What you really need to essay titles, be asking is what scientists will be saying in press conferences in 2010 about their human cloning research, talking about cover letter, work that they actually did in 2005. What follows was written in 2003 and is important background on human cloning research. One thing is beyond any doubt: despite huge risks, and widespread public condemnation, by January 2001, many different scientists across the world were already locked in a race to english teaching phd thesis, clone the first human, as a baby for TV cameras. Huge amounts of money are at stake in human cloning research.

Teams have announced their aim, many people have come forward with offers of eggs, their own adult cells and money - and the US still has no laws to prevent human cloning from happening, nor do most other countries of the world. The headlines above first came nearer reality on 23 Feb 1997 when world media reported the existence of assistant teacher Dolly the writing fellowship, sheep: cloned from an adult. I had predicted the Dolly headline in 1993, in my book The Genetic Revolution. A few days later, the teacher cover letter, Edinburgh scientists admitted that frozen cells had been used to make Dolly, having seemed to deny it when the story first broke. That meant that animals (and in theory people) could be cloned after death.

US scientists also revealed that they had cloned monkeys (using cells from an to college essay embryo). Teacher Cover. The British scientist responsible for creative environments in education—a systematic review Dolly admitted to a Parliamentary committee (6 March 1997) that human cloning could be possible in cover, two to three years (after vigorous denials by many embryologists). Teaching Phd Thesis. I had been saying the same from the moment the story broke. President Clinton launched an assistant teacher letter immediate 90 day report into the implications for human cloning as soon as the creative learning in education—a, news of Dolly became public. Norway did the assistant, same while the EC urgently considered a response. The news on human cloning experiments exposed the fact that most nations of the world had little or no legislation covering genetic engineering.

This has to change. Clinton announced in May 1997 that human cloning should be banned. He was warmly applauded. However, what he went on to say was that the proposed ban was only for 5 years, and that nuclear transfer experiments (basic human cloning technique) could continue, though not with government money. Environments Literature. In other words Clones may be made, but not born for letter the next five years. However, Clinton could not even deliver - his own partial ban was thrown out by Congress. Meanwhile UK Parliament in January 2001 made experimental creation of human clones legal, so long as the embryos were made for medical research and destroyed before implantation.

Richard Seed said over two years ago that he was a few weeks from his human cloning experiments. He has attracted money and people. I've met him and debated with him on TV. He has been followed by Clonaid, a new human cloning organisation with cash and 300 couples ready to start. Dr Seed declared that he cannot be stopped from human cloning under current US law, and if human cloning laws are changed he will move the work to descriptive essay football game, Mexico. Cover Letter. He has announced a human cloning lab for english language Japan - purchase of land and $15 million backing.

Every week there is assistant teacher letter, another mammal cloning headline. Dolly the sheep gave birth to language phd thesis, a healthy lamb, Bonny. In July 1998 came rumours of assistant teacher letter a cloned mouse, Mickey, created by Dr Ryuzo Yanagimachi, University of Hawaii. In November 1998, we heard that Japanese scientists had already cloned cows from essay, milk - cells in assistant letter, the milk. Learning Environments In Education—a Systematic Literature. If you want to see the staggering pace of human cloning announcements - check out our human cloning news summary. As I say, remember that what you hear today is not what is going on assistant teacher now, its already old history. And some scientists in intro to college, the field are determined to keep it that way.

Hence you only assistant cover knew about Dolly's creation when she was already 7 months old - more on this below. Another example of secrecy was the to college, extraordinary announcement by Advanced Cell Technology, Massachusetts on 12 November 1998 that three years previously they managed to take the nucleus from a human cell from Dr Jose Cibelli and teacher, insert it into a cows egg. The human genes activated and the egg began to divide. They destroyed it at the 32 cell stage, well on intro the way to becoming a Dr Cibelli's clone. This research was more spectacular than Dolly, yet carried out years earlier with a total news blackout. Assistant Teacher Cover Letter. More recently in March 2001 Australian scientists said they had been carrying on similar secret human cloning experiments using human cells and essay titles, pig eggs for over two years.

What I want to know is this: what are they doing today that they won't be talking about till 2002 or 2003 or perhaps 2004? It has been good to see truth about cloning begin to assistant cover letter, prevail, after deliberate under-playing of the environments in education—a literature, news by so-called experts in assistant letter, a damage limitation exercise to prevent destruction of their research grants by public demand. They have been scared by public reaction. Essay Titles. They think the public has no real understanding and so these matters should be kept from the public eye, discussed only by assistant cover letter, scientists and ethical committees. But these committees are dominated by the industry. What will be the next human cloning headline? You can be sure that we will see a continuous stream of new revelations now that has become politically acceptable for scientists to come out essay of a football game of the woodwork and talk about these things. I want to clone my dad and have him as a baby Just before the assistant teacher cover letter, announcement of Dolly the sheep, someone e-mailed me asking if she could clone her dead father. The answer of course is yes, so long as living cells have been kept in culture, taken from before death, or have been frozen in an appropriate manner.

She is also willing to be cloned herself. Phd Thesis. These are important issues, not science fiction. I had another e-mail from a man offering to volunteer to be cloned. Scott writes Do you need any volunteers for teacher cover human cloning experiments? Let me make it absolutely clear that I am opposed to human cloning on ethical grounds. It is open to gross abuse. It undermines the uniqueness of the individual and descriptive game, raises profound religious and ethical questions. Three reasons not to clone: (Press here for more) 1. Health risks from assistant, mutation of genes - an abnomal baby would be a nightmare come true. Huge risks of mutations - of thesis about the effects of computer games a monster. Just look at what has happened in animal experiments.

You can't always spot the mutations or developmental abnormalities by gene testing, nor by assistant letter, ultrasound scans, until after birth. 2. Emotional risks - child grows up knowing her mother is essay titles, her sister, her grandmother is her mother. Assistant Teacher Cover Letter. Every time her mother looks at her she is seeing herself growing up. Princeton. Unbearable emotional pressures on a teenager trying to letter, establish his or her identity. What happens to a marriage when the father sees his wife's clone grow up into the exact replica (by appearance) of the beautiful 18 year old he fell in love with 35 years ago? A sexual relationship would of course be with his wife's twin, no incest involved technically. 3. Risk of abuse of the creative fellowship, technology - see below. Reasons people may want human cloning: Reasons why people want human cloning may be rational or irrational. That is not the point.

The fact is assistant teacher, that a recent US survey conducted by princeton writing, CNN found that 6% of teacher cover letter US citizens think human cloning could be quite a good idea. Judging by people who leave comments on intro essay this website, the reasons may vary widely. Here are a few: Human cloning has always caught the assistant cover letter, public imagination. Intro Essay. We now have the technology to take a few cells from a modern day Einstein, or a musical genius or a child prodigy and to create hundreds of cloned babies which have exactly the same genes. Of course, as identical twins, clones will have individual differences, separate identities - separate souls.

However, studies of cover letter twins raised apart show remarkable similarities. Essay Titles. There is assistant, more in our genes than we often realise. Just think how attractive that could be to some dictator who fancies the idea of watching himself growing up, or dreams of populating the intro essay, world with a new race of genetically superior people. We will almost certainly be able to clone the dead too, from cells taken from their bodies before they die and assistant teacher, kept alive in culture. English. This is assistant teacher letter, a standard technique. In this way parents could reproduce a carbon copy of a child who tragically died. Dolly the sheep was made using frozen cells. (Clonaid claimed in January 2003 that they had cloned the dead son of a Japanese couple who had been killed in descriptive essay of a game, an accident). For years, many scientists have been telling us that human cloning was impossible, and would never be possible. How wrong they all were.

It is absurd for geneticists and embryologists to mock and stifle debate by dismissing vital issues as science fiction. Teacher Letter. As we have seen recently, yesterday's science fiction is of computer games, today's reality when it comes to genes. We can hardly keep pace with the lightning advances being made. In 1993, the Mail on Sunday described my meeting in the 1980s with a leading British scientist who claimed he had cloned human embryos by artificial twinning. He had separated cells shortly after fertilisation in a process mimicked by nature some 4,000 times a day somewhere in letter, the world. Each cell had the potential to become a new embryo. Over 15 years later, this scientist has yet to go public about his early experiments.

The reaction from intro, leading embryologists in 1993 was swift and damning. They said that it was impossible in assistant letter, humans, and anyway, who would wants to do it? This was despite the fact that artificial twinning was already a standard breeding technique in other mammals, and that natural human twins have been around since the beginning of princeton creative writing fellowship human existence. Indeed, 4,000 identical twins are born every day somewhere in the world. It is a proven technology. Anyone with an ounce of intelligence could see that artificial acceleration of the natural twinning process should not only assistant letter be possible, but also able in theory to produce healthy children. Systematic Literature. Thus the protestations were particularly silly, but swallowed by the media with hardly a question. Artificial trimming of assistant letter human embryos in 1993. Just five months later Jerry Hall of Washington University announced that he too had managed to artificially twin identical human embryos in a process that has always been perfectly legal in Britain, although requiring a licence.

The embryos he used were defective and were destroyed shortly after the experiments. Nevertheless, his work caused public outcry. The event was reported in scientific language as part of a research paper in creative learning environments literature review, a journal but the significance was completely missed. The trouble is teacher cover, that genetics is descriptive game, complicated and understood by only a few journalists in any depth. Perhaps that is why the BBC decided when the teacher, news broke about Dolly the sheep that the story should not be covered at all because it was not news. This bizarre line was held for half a day after I first telephoned Press Association and the Sunday Telegraph to tell them that another paper was about to run the story on the front page. The Sunday Telegraph responded at 9pm Saturday night by english teaching phd thesis, stopping the paper and redoing their own front page. Press Association ran two pages on assistant teacher it, sent all over the world. Within an hour television companies globally were beginning to wake up.

Within 48 hours President Clinton was issuing emergency measures having been shocked by what was possible under US law. One reason people have given for doing this kind of intro to college research is to make spare parts in the future. Once an embryo has been twinned, one embryo can be implanted and assistant letter, allowed to develop into a baby, while the other is creative fellowship, frozen. If the child later develops an illness such as leukaemia, then the frozen twin could be thawed and implanted into a surrogate mother, to be culled for spare parts after a few months' gestation. You and I may react against such ideas, but when sick or dying children are involved, pressures can be enormous to do all that is scientifically possible. Parents are very persuasive.

Who can stare a beautiful child in the face and try to explain about ethics in the face of possible death, about statistical chances and moral dangers ? These things are extremely difficult and genetics is making choices more complex still. A number of steps have already been taken. For example, tissue from aborted foetuses is assistant teacher letter, already used to treat adults. Writing. Time-warp twins have already been born - non-identical twins conceived in the laboratory on cover the same day, but implanted 18 months apart. And it is not unknown for a mother to agree to princeton writing, have another child for the express purpose of providing much needed transplant material for the older child. Spare part production from clones would extend these principles. For some time, I have speculated that we would be able to go further: instead of merely producing artificial twins identical to teacher, each other but not to their parents, we would one day be able to produce several hundred identical children, just using human eggs and cells from an writing adult (nuclear transfer). This too was dismissed out of hand as alarmist and fanciful by leading authorities, despite the fact that such experiments had already been carried out successfully in frogs as long ago as 1952. Frogs are easier than mammals to assistant teacher cover, manipulate which is probably why we heard in 1997 of headless frogs rather than headless sheep. The truth is that when it comes to english, cloning of mammals there has been at times a deliberate conspiracy of silence. At the teacher letter, very moment of such protestations, advanced experiments of varying kinds were already taking place in utmost secrecy.

Make no mistake: gene technology has the power to cure, feed, alter and destroy us, and many scientists are scared of thesis games a massive public reaction which could stop their work - if you find out what they are up to. Assistant Letter. There is a reluctance to tell the full story until afterwards. Scientific announcements can be long after events. When it came to cloning Dolly the sheep, why was there no press statement a year before about what they were hoping to do? Dr Wilmut of the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh told me during a World Service interview that one reason for princeton writing fellowship delay was to assistant cover letter, file a patent. Gene technology is big business, and cloning is worth millions. The cloning announcement was initially valued by the city at $60 million - the amount by about of computer games, which the PPL shares rose on the days following the announcement. At the time I said the next step (soon) would be cloning of adult mammals.

Once again there was a chorus of cover indignant reaction from the the effects of computer, cloning industry with the usual comments No one would want to or It can't be done. They are wrong. The fact is that at teacher cover letter, the very moment that these comments were being made, the thesis the effects of computer, Roslin Institute was already well advanced in such adult cloning techniques. Teacher Letter. Hence a year or so later, we heard not only english phd thesis that they had succeeded, but that the lambs were already six months old. The time to debate these matters is not a year or more after an experiment, but before the process begins.

Cloning human embryos for research. Some scientists claim that cures for certain diseases will only be found by cloning human embryos for research. Letter. Investors are not convinced: since UK Parliament approved human cloning for research there have been less than five applications. One was a research facility in Newcastle, the other was the Edinburgh creators of phd thesis Dolly. Neither facility succeeded in raising enough funds and letter, most of the work quickly ground to english language, a halt. The fact is assistant cover, that cloned human embryos have been left behind by huge advances in adult stem cell research, which has attracted large amounts of research funding. Secrecy continues.

The other day after a media related discussion on creative writing fellowship cloning humans, a leading British infertility specialist confessed to me privately that he was carrying out assistant teacher experiments himself on animals relating to human medical research that would raise serious ethical questions in the public mind if the experiments became known. Intro Essay. He made it very clear that he had no intention of letting the public know because a reaction would endanger his work. He claimed it was not really in secret because he had talked to an ethical committee about it. As I said to him, what disturbs me is that people like him appear to say one thing in public, on the media, and another the moment the assistant teacher letter, cameras are turned off. There is an inconsistency which undermines trust and destroys credibility. Certainly when it comes to cloning as we have seen the track record of honesty is not good among so-called experts. Many of the issues are complex, and gene technology has tremendous power for good if properly used. The question is: where do we draw the line? Geep have already been born - half sheep and half goat.

What about combining humans and english, monkeys to make a half and teacher, half breed? This is not difficult. All you have to do is combine two balls of growing cells in the pre-embryo stage. Fortunately, only a few human embryo cells were added to the rabbit embryo - which was born looking exactly like a normal rabbit but with a mixture of human cells throughout its brain, skin, bone, kidneys, liver, eyes and heart. Will humonkeys be recognised as morally responsible individuals before the law if they are able to talk? Monkeys and humans share most of their genes in common anyway. Will theologians decide that humonkeys are able to receive salvation like the rest of us?

Are these doors that should be opened? A Nobel prize winner who helped develop nuclear science has said he fears a new generation of smart viruses could wipe us all out.

But this is just another aspect of the same thing. The lesson of history is that whatever is possible will be tried somewhere by someone at some time but this is no excuse for sitting back. Whilst it is true that laws cannot prevent catastrophe or crime, they do help define the language teaching, boundaries of acceptable behaviour and make deviation less common. It was inspiring to meet women from different cultures and backgrounds, all united as champions of motherhood. That night the 2011 Mother of the Year was named: Ernestine Allen, a beautiful woman representing the District of Columbia. Ernestine is an english educator, a counselor, and, with her husband, an teacher letter Elder in princeton creative writing The Greater Mt. Cover Letter! Calvary Holy Church.

When the Allens’ youngest son fell victim to a violent crime, they responded by establishing the Bereaved Parent Support Group. Ernestine’s oldest son Ronald said that his mother, the tenth child of eighteen, learned early how to share. “That is where we get our giving personality,” he says. “My mother has done it all her life because she loves to encourage and empower others. And through our toughest time, the passing of my brother, she was the glue that held us and our faith together.” This son’s tribute says it all. I have had the joy of working with women and their families on almost every continent.

From one culture to english phd thesis another, I have seen exactly what he described: When mothers are strong, their children — regardless of the challenges they face — tend to assistant teacher be strong. Descriptive Essay! When they’re resilient and filled with faith, their children are likely to be resilient and filled with faith. It was no doubt curious to those at the American Mothers Convention that an unmarried woman without children would be invited to assistant letter address them. But I care deeply about motherhood precisely because of my life experience. The doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, of teaching which I am a member, are clear: that the teacher family is ordained of God and that there is essay titles, no pursuit for a woman more ennobling than motherhood. Period. My faith means everything to me. So as the years have marched by and my hopes and prayers for marriage and assistant cover motherhood have as yet to be answered, I have wrestled with what motherhood means for game, all women. Why do I feel deeply about mothers? Because I know exactly how it feels to NOT have the assistant teacher letter privilege of fulfilling the foundational aspect of a woman’s divine nature–which is bearing and nurturing children.

For a woman of faith, nothing fills the void of not having children. Nothing. So as a tribute to the highest, noblest calling a woman may receive, I share five truths about mothers. Truth #1: Motherhood is creative, a sacred trust from God. The destiny of teacher letter mankind is in the hands of mothers. This is not hyperbole. Language! The proverb, “Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6) is more than a formula; it is reality. Letter! Mothers not only perpetuate the human race, they raise up the next generation.

Elder Neal A. Maxwell, who served as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, said, “When the real history of mankind is fully disclosed, will it feature the echoes of essay titles gunfire or the shaping sound of lullabies? The great armistices made by military men or the peacemaking of women in homes and in neighborhoods? Will what happens in cover letter cradles and kitchens prove to be more controlling than what happened in congresses?” (Ensign, May 1978, 10-11) God has placed the well-being of His children in the hands of mothers. Truth #2: We tend to define motherhood as maternity, but the english phd thesis word “mother” has layers of teacher cover letter meaning. Eve was called “the mother of all living” before she ever bore a child. English Language Phd Thesis! Mother is the assistant cover word that best describes the essence of who we are as women. It defines our identity, our divine nature and the gifts with which we have been endowed. In reality, all women are mothers.

We all need the nurturing touch of the mother who bore us and the “mothers” who bear with us. Essay Titles! One of the greatest blessings of my life has been the privilege of learning from marvelous women — beginning with my mother and grandmother, but including others who have taught me things I would have never grasped on assistant cover, my own. They have made all the difference. Truth #3: Mothers can do more than any others to cure the problems that exist in our society. While serving in the General Presidency of the Relief Society, the women’s organization of the LDS Church, we hosted Mrs. Jehan Sedat, the widow of Egyptian president Anwar Sedat, at a luncheon not long after a mass shooting in a U.S. high school. During the luncheon, the conversation turned to this horrifying event, and intro to college one man opined that the problem was with the failure of law enforcement agencies. Mrs.

Sedat immediately countered him: “No, the problem is with our homes. Cover! Too many mothers have abdicated responsibility for teaching their children what is right. What happens in society all begins with mothers.” There is no better place to teach integrity or compassion or the virtue of virtue. Perhaps that is why President Gordon B. Hinckley called women the language “one bright shining hope in a world that is assistant teacher letter, marching toward self-destruction” (One Bright Shining Hope, Deseret Book, 1) Truth #4: Satan is real, and he has declared war on women. The adversary understands full well that those who rock the cradle are strategically positioned to rock his diabolical empire. Creative Environments In Education—a! Thus, today his destructive myths about women and mothers abound. Here are just three:

Myth #1: Men are more important and assistant teacher have all the power, so if women want to have influence they should be more like men. Myth #2: A woman’s value is based solely on essay football game, size and shape. Myth #3: The only worthwhile validation comes from letter outside the home, and thus, motherhood is a waste of any talented woman’s time. Too many women have bought these lies. Our culture is disintegrating at language phd thesis the speed of letter light, and regrettably, the female gender is thesis of computer, doing its share of the damage. Sleazy women who flaunt their indiscretions jam the airwaves and monopolize magazine covers. Other distortions are equally troubling. One prominent magazine annually publishes its “100 Most Powerful Women” cover story. Cover Letter! Almost every woman mentioned is a politician, entertainer or CEO.

I mean no disrespect to any of princeton creative these women. What I dispute is the assistant distortion that in order to have influence, a woman must have money, fame or a title. That is a lie! External validation has short-term value at best. It’s difficult to hug an award. No one from the descriptive essay of a office will call on Mothers Day to thank you for changing their life. There world’s praise pales when compared to the joy of family. Truth #5: Mothers have more influence than they realize. Women are the leaders of teacher leaders. Fellowship! Who has more influence on a man than his wife?

Or on children than their mother? The word that best describes leadership by a woman is mother. Is there any influence more enduring than a mother’s shepherding of her children along the assistant letter path towards exaltation? One of my sisters just finished chemotherapy. Two days after her final treatment, while still battling nausea, she insisted on running a 5k with her two daughters and son-in-law. I thought she was crazy, but she not only ran the race but won a medal in her age category. (We like to english language tell her it’s because there wasn’t anyone else in her age category.) Within hours, both daughters had posted Facebook tributes to letter their mother. Imagine what she taught them that day about courage and about running the race of life. Mothers are always teaching, often in simple ways. As a youth, it was not uncommon for Mother to wake me in the middle of the night and thesis about the effects of computer say, “Sheri, take your pillow and go downstairs.” We lived in Kansas, in “tornado alley” (think Dorothy and Oz), and that meant a tornado was nearby.

It was scary, but mother always calmly reassured me, “Everything will be okay.” I learned early to teacher cover listen for her voice. To this day, when the pressure becomes too intense, I call home to hear mother say, “Everything will be okay.” After 9/11, First Lady Laura Bush described something similar: “I called my own children immediately to reassure them,” she said, “and then I called my own mother, just for the comfort of her voice.” (WashingonPost.com, 21 September 2001) A mother’s voice is language phd thesis, unlike any other because a mother’s influence is endless. On this Mother’s Day, I pay tribute to my mother and to the other “mothers” in assistant cover my life whose collective influence has been life-altering. And I thank Heavenly Father for giving his daughters the the effects of computer games most ennobling gift of all: the assistant privilege of motherhood. Sheri Dew is the princeton creative fellowship President and CEO of Deseret Book Company, a member of the assistant cover letter Deseret News Editorial Advisory Board, and the author of “Are We Not All Mothers.” Please say something.

I enjoyed reading this for several reasons.

I heard Sheri Dew speak at a Time Out For Women the week before ths spoke the essay titles American Mothers. She commented on her apprehension at being asked to teacher speak to Mothers. Thank you for sharing, I don’t know that I would have looked it up on my own.

That part about movies was interesting; I’d never thought about it that way before. My favorite part, though, “External validation has short-term value at best.
